Aim: How can we makes observations and inferences? Do now: What is an observation?

What is an observation?

Observations, Inferences, Classification How do we make an observation? What are some examples of An observation?

Inferences What is an inference? A logical interpretation based upon prior knowledge and experience. Based on observations

Example Look at the picture below. Take a minute and record at least 2 observations and 2 inferences on your own. When you are done turn to your elbow partner and share.

Results Observations Inferences

Classification What does it mean to classify something? arrange (a group of people or things) in classes or categories according to shared qualities or characteristics. What are some classification systems you have already learned?

How could we classify these items?

Examples of Earth Science Classification Systems
