Friday, February 27 1. Turn in your Matter Storyboard and your Vocab Poster. Remember, your Study Guide is due Monday (at the BEGINNING of class). 2. Take out your Science Notebook and a pen or pencil for today. 3. Answer these review questions in your Science notebook: a) List 4 examples of different properties of matter. b) Classify each property you listed as one of the two types of properties. c) Why do you think Scientists classify knowledge? d) What is another example of something Scientists classify?

Circle Activity Instructions These are in the bin at your table. You have about 4 minutes. *Reminders: work together everyone helps sort rotate turns writing on the white board only work with your team

What are the 3 ways you classified the circles? Color Size Number What do you think the circles represented?

Stars

In your Science notebook, write the title “Star Properties”.

Copy the following classifications from the circle activity in your Science Notebook, then infer which star property each represented: Star Properties 1.Color = _______________ 2.Size = ________________ 3.Number = _____________

Properties of Stars Astronomers classify stars by their color, size, and brightness. Other properties of stars are chemical composition and mass.

Color = Temperature – a stars color indicates the temperature of its ’ surface. The hottest stars appear ______. The cooler stars appear ______. The spectrum of color in a star is from blues to greens to yellows and reds.

Size = Age Think: What do you think happens to the size of stars as they get older? ----------------------- Pair Share Answer: Start with Seat A

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PM9CQDlQI 0A 1. What did you learn about star size? 2. How does this clip relate to what else we have been learning? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PM9CQDlQI 0A

Number = Amount of Brightness The brightness of a star as viewed from Earth is dependent on many factors such as color intensity and distance. Apparent Magnitude/Brightness: the brightness of a star as it appears from Earth. The apparent magnitude/brightness decreases as its distance from you increases Absolute Magnitude/Brightness or Luminosity how bright a star really is. Which of these new words mean the same thing?

Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram (H-R Diagram)

To Do Complete the Review Worksheet. Do the 2 nd part FIRST (the HR Diagram that classifies stars). Work on study guide or extra credit when finished.
