Fashion by Kate Spade In the early 1990s, Kate Spade was an accessories editor at Mademioselle magazine. She noticed something missing in the accessories market. So she designed a functional handbag that would enhance an outfit in the dame way a necklace or pin accessorizes. She created six design that combined simple shapes with lively, colorful patterns. Then in 1993, she and her husband Andy Spade formed their company Kate Spade. During the first twi years in business, Spade made handbags in her New York apartment and marketed them at trade shows. Her first trade-show booth cost $2,500. She recalls, We received a couple of small orders, though not enough to pay for the first booth. But the accounts were goos, so we started building relationships. Opening stores in the fashionable SoHo district of New York City helped her handbags become must-have accessories. By 2000, the Kate Spade company was earning an estimate $60 million per year. However, after more than a decade of growth and success, Kate Spade products needed a new focus to avoid decline. ANALYZE and WRITE 1. Write a sentence about what inspired Kate Spades design. 2. Write a paragraph about the challenge(s) of keeping a design brand successful.
