Five Themes of Geography Ancient Greece

Location Absolute – 40⁰ N, 23⁰ E Relative –Northeastern Mediterranean Sea, East of Italy, Southern Europe

Place Cultural –Greek-speaking, birthplace of western civilization, first democracy, original Olympic games, contributions to art, architecture, science, mathematics, literature, drama and the study of history. Religion was based on myths and legends. Physical – mountains, bays and islands

Human/Environment Interaction They modified the environment by using stones to build walls around the city, carve figures and they built their cities on top of the mountains They depended on the environment to grow crops. There was a sacred spring that the oracle used The environment impacted the Greeks in many ways: where they established colonies, they carved the top of their columns to look like the leaves of a wild plant, during the winter months(darkest season of the year) the oracle did not answer questions

Movement They began to bring Greek customs and religion to far distant lands by establishing colonies. By 600 BCE they had founded over thirty different colonies. People all over the world are still effected by this spreading of Greek Culture.
