The Counterweight System and Theatre Safety By: Makayla, Emilia, and José

What does counterweight system mean? The counterweight system: a type of rigging that uses weights to counterbalance horizontal battens containing scenery, curtains, or lighting instruments.

Matching Arbor D Batten F Counterweight A Fly loft E Grid C Head block A weight used to balance the weight of a batten A pulley, mounted to steel, that changes the direction of lift of operating lines between the loft block and arbor Steel grating, located near the steel roof, that provides mounting locations for rigging equipment and access to such areas for maintenance Rack that contains weights used to balance a load Space between the roof and the performance area that is not visible to the audience Metal bar used to hold lights, scenery, or curtains Arbor Batten Counterweight Fly loft Grid Head block D F A E C B

Matching D B C E A Loading Platform Loft Block Pin Pin Rail Rope Lock Small ring that is placed around each line and pin in the arbor, to secure them when not in use A pulley mounted to the grid that supports and changes the direction of a lift line cable between the load and the head block A railing where pins are pulled or locked when moving a batten A gallery above the stage floor where counterweights can be added and removed from the arbors The lever pulled to unlock a line in the arbor so the batten may be moved D B C E A Loading Platform Loft Block Pin Pin Rail Rope Lock

How do you load scenery onto a batten? First, you attach the scenery to the batten. Then, you load weights in the arbor. (Scenery should be heavier than the weights for the best operation.)

Safety Rules for the loading platform: Warn those onstage that a batten is coming in/going out Example: “Heads, first legs, coming in!” Watch where batten is going at all times while it’s moving Put the rope lock over the pin after task is completed
