A Definition of the Water Cycle Water keeps going around and around in the water cycle. Even though the water goes through different cycles, it is still the same water. The water molecules keeps going around and around in a cycle that never stops.

Evaporation Evaporation is when the sun heats up the water and it turns into vapor. The water vapor rises into the sky. Evaporation starts of the water cycle. When the sun hits the water, it warms it up. Warm things go up. That is why water vapor rises.

Transpiration When water from a plant or person rises to the surface of the skin or leaves, it helps evaporation happen. Water is inside of animals, people and plants. When it comes to the surface it is called Transpiration.

Condensation When water vapor gets cold, it changes into tiny water droplets and forms a cloud. Higher in the atmosphere, the temperatures are colder. That makes the water vapor condense into droplet.

Precipitation The clouds get heavy and the water falls as hail, sleet, rain or snow. Precipitation can fall in the form of hail, sleet, rain or snow. The water molecule fall back to the ground.

Collection The water may fall into a lake or river etc. It might fall to the ground, which might absorb it. The water may become groundwater that we might drink. Collection is the last step of the water cycle. The water that falls from the sky will collect underground in the Aquifer, or above ground in lakes, rivers and oceans.

The Cycle is Complete Evaporation Transpiration Collection The water cycle goes from Evaporation and Transpiration, to Condensation, Precipitation and Collection and then the cycle starts all over again. Precipitation Condensation
