Chapter 4B Jamie, Brook & Ky !Special Endings & Adj. Placement! Chapter 4B Jamie, Brook & Ky

Special Endings ísimo/a and ito/ita

Adding certain endings to adjectives makes quit a difference Adding certain endings to adjectives makes quit a difference. When adding the endings like ísimo/a it adds “very,” “most” or “extremely”. The ending – ísimo can be added to an adjective in Spanish. Adjectives that end in a vowel, ísimo would replace the final vowel. For example if you use the adjective grande (meaning: big) and you wanted to describe how big the bear is then you would put ísimo on grande.

For example if you use the adjective grande (meaning: big) and you wanted to describe how big the bear is then you would put ísimo on grande. El oso es grande. The bear is big. El oso es grandísimo. The bear is very big. To say that some thing is very small you would basically do the same thing to the adjective, for example: La banda es pequeño. The band is small. La banda es pequeñísimo. The band is very small.

For the adjective that end in –ble there are different rules For the adjective that end in –ble there are different rules. First change the –ble at the end of the adjective and change it to –bil before adding –ísimo to the end. If the adjective has an accent mark you lose it when you add –ísimo ending. Ese malabarista era amable. That juggler was nice. Ese malabarista era amabilísimo. That juggler was very nice.

Adjectives that have –co/-ca, -go/ga or –z are changed. C qu cómico comiquísimo G gu larga laguísima Z c feliz felicísimo

Again adding different endings changes a lot because adding –ísimo/a it makes the adjective sound more like “very,” “extremely” or “most”. When you add –ito or –cito to the end of an adjective then it make the noun sound very small. -ito: oso osito -cito: león leoncito

adjective placment

You will recall that adjectives are masculine or feminine and singular or plural and usually follow the nouns they modify. Era un tigre feroz. It was a fierce lion. Los payasos del circo The circus clowns were eran divertidos. funny.

La blanca nieve The white snow caía. was falling. Adjective that describe a permanent characteristics often precede the noun they describe. La blanca nieve The white snow caía. was falling. Cardinal numbers usually precede ordinal numbers when both are used in one sentence to refer to the same noun. Eran los dos primeros They were the first hombres en la fila. two men in the line.

Several common adjectives may be used before or after the nouns they describe. Before a masculine singular noun, bueno changes to buen and malo changes to mal. Era un buen circo. Era un circo bueno. It was a good circus. Ella no era una mala actróbata. actróbata mal. She was not a bad acrobat.

Some adjectives change their meaning according to whether they are use before or after a noun. Es un gran circo. It is a great circus. Es un circo grande. It is a big circus. La chica pobre. The poor(with no money) girl. La pobre chica. The poor(pitiful) girl.
