3  Most adjectives that end in-E or a consonant have the same masculine and femenine forms Ana es interesante José es interesante Ana is interesting José is interesting  The masculine form is used to refer nouns of different genders. Juan y Ana son rubiosJuan y Ana son feos Juan and Ana are blond Juan and Ana are ugly

4 Position of adjectives  Adjectives generally follow the nouns they modify. La chica bonita es alta The pretty girl’s name is Ana El libro azul es un diccionario The blue book is a dictionary  Adjectives of quantity are placed before the modified noun. Estudio una lección todos los días I study one lesson every day Hay muchas chicas bonitas en la clase There are many pretty girls in the class

5 SOME ADJETIVES Pequeño/a--small Alto/a--tall Bajo/a--short Limpio/a--clean Bueno/a--good Difícil--difficult Fácil--easy Feo/a--ugly Gordo/a--fal Importante--important Interesante--interesting Malo/a--bad Mucho/a—much/many/a lot Sucio/a-dirty Trabajador/a—hard-working Colors amarillo/a-yellow rojo/a-red azul-blue negro/a-black anaranjado/a-orange gris-gray blanco/a-white café-brown morado/a-purple verde-green

6 Adjectives of nationality  They form like other descriptive adjectives. Usually Male ends “o” and female ends in “a.” ItalianO italianA  There are some that end in “e” for example: estadounidense (somebody from USA)  Nationalities that end in a consonant add –A for feminine form. Español españolA Español españolA

7 Exceptions  There are some adjectives like bueno/a and malo/a that can be placed before or after the noun.  Before a masculine noun the adjective bueno and malo are shortened: Juan es un mal amigoJosé es un buen chico

8 More exceptions gran = grande Nueva York es una gran ciudad Nueva York es una ciudad grande Gran=greatGrande=big/large

9 What verb? SER: when we want to describe the characteristics of a person, thing, places or ideas. These descriptions are usually permanent. El libro es azul La casa es blanca El edificio es grande The book is blue The house is white The building is big ESTAR: when the description can be different later on. There are La puerta está cerradaEl jefe está enojadoEl terreno está sucio The door is closed The boss is madThe site is dirty. There are several adjectives that can change the meanning if it is use with estar or ser. El chico es listo El chico está listo The boy is smartthe boy is ready
