2© Copyright 2011 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. What is Site Recovery Manager? Site Recovery Manager Complements vSphere: simplest disaster protection with auto vCenter discovery and embedded array based replication management enable frequent non-disruptive testing ensure fast, automated failover Simplify management of recovery and migration plans Replace manual runbooks with centralized recovery plans From weeks to minutes to set up new plan SRM Momentum: Introduced in Q ,000+ units sold 5,000+ customers 50% annual growth in 2010 Demo

Technology – vSphere Replication Virtual machines replicated without advanced array functionality Enables replication between heterogeneous datastores Replication is managed as a property of a virtual machine Efficient replication minimizes impact on VM workloads

6© Copyright 2011 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. vSphere Replication Details Replication Granularity per Virtual Machine Can opt to replicate all or a subset of the VMs disks You can create the initial copy in any way you want - even via sneaker net! You have the option to place the replicated disks where you want Disks are replicated in group consistent manner Simplified Replication Management User selects destination location for target disks User selects Recovery Point Objective (RPO) User can supply initial copy to save on bandwidth Replication Specifics Changes on the source disks are tracked by ESX Deltas are sent to the remote site Does not use VMware snapshots

7© Copyright 2011 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. Replication UI Select VMs to replicate from vSphere client by right click options Can do this on one VM, or multiple VMs simultaneously

8© Copyright 2011 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. vSphere Replication 1.0 Limitations Focus on virtual disks of powered-on VMs ISOs and floppy images are not replicated Powered-off/suspended VMs not replicated Non-critical files not replicated (e.g. logs, stats, swap, dumps) vSR works at the virtual device layer Independent of disk format specifics Independent of primary-side snapshots VM is recovered with collapse snapshots Physical RDMs are not supported Storage DRS, FT, linked clones, VM templates not supported Automated failback of vSR-protected VMs not supported yet Virtual Hardware 7, or later, in the VM is required Minimum RPO of 15 minutes

Planned Migrations For App Consistency & No Data Loss Overview Benefits Two workflows can be applied to recovery plans: DR failover Planned migration Planned migration ensures application consistency and no data-loss during migration Graceful shutdown of production VMs in application consistent state Data sync to complete replication of VMs Recover fully replicated VMs Better support for planned migrations No loss of data during migration process Recover application-consistent VMs at recovery site Planned Migration Site B Site A Replication 1 Shut down production VMs 2 Sync data, stop replication and present LUNs to vSphere 3 Recover app- consistent VMs vSphere

12© Copyright 2011 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. Will shutdown protected VMs, and then synchronize them! Planned Migration New is Planned Migration.

13© Copyright 2011 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. Simplify failback process Automate replication management Eliminate need to set up new recovery plan Streamline frequent bi-directional migrations Automated Failback To Streamline Bi-Directional Migrations Re-protect VMs from Site B to Site A Reverse replication Apply reverse resource mapping Automate failover from Site B to Site A Reverse original recovery plan Restrictions Does not apply if Site A has undergone major changes / been rebuilt Not available with vSphere Replication Overview Benefits Automated Failback Site B Site A Reverse Replication Reverse original recovery plan vSphere

14© Copyright 2011 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. Reprotect After you use planned migration (or DR Event) to migrate to your recovery site, you must reprotect to enable the failback.

15© Copyright 2011 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. Failback Facilitates DR operations for enterprises that are mandated to perform a true failover as part of DR testing Simplifies recovery process after disaster Single button to failback all recovered VMs Interfaces with storage to automatically reverse replication Replays existing recovery plans – so new virtual machines are not part of failback Reverse Replication Site A (Primary)Site B (Recovery)

16© Copyright 2011 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. Failback To failback, you need first to do a migration (DR or Planned), followed by a reprotect. To do an actual failback, the recovery plan is now run again The recovery plan will now failback the VMs to the original site.

20© Copyright 2011 EMC Corporation. All rights reserved. Miscellaneous IPv6 SRM will support IPv6 for all network links vSphere Replication will support communication over IPv6 if underlying ESXi servers support IPv6 IP Customization performance increase In guest callouts: Since 1.0 you can execute a script that was held on the SRM server, now you can do it inside the guest Great for application customization
