Presentation transcript:

The first part of the page keeley probe can be use as a pre- lab activity, then following the M&M lab come back to it and give the students an opportunity to change any answers before having the group write an individual answer to the 2nd part of the page keeley. Follow with the students picking the best of the explanation to share with the class.

M&M's Color Distribution and Nutrition Lab: What is a variable? D R Y M I X Dependent vs Independent What is an independent variable? What is a dependent variable? Briefly review independent/dependent/control. Introduce DRY MIX. Discuss differences & similarities.

M&M's Color Distribution and Nutrition Lab: What is a variable? Independent variable It is the variable that you (the scientist) CONTROL/DECIDE It does not depend on anything else in the experiment Example: you want to measure how much a plant grows in one week depending on what type of liquid it receives. You control/decide the types of liquid Dependent variable It is the variable you MEASURE It depends on the independent variable As the independent variable changes, the dependent variable changes in response Example: the dependent variable in the example above is the height of the plant Introduce the DRY MIX acronym. Have students recite the acronym & it’s meanings with their elbow partner then write it on their lab.

M&M's Color Distribution and Nutrition Lab: What is a variable? Easy way to remember what is what: DRY MIX D = Dependent R = Responding Y = Y-axis M = Manipulated I = Independent X = X-axis Introduce the DRY MIX acronym. Have students recite the acronym & it’s meanings with their elbow partner then write it on their lab.

M&M Distribution and Nutrition Lab – Part 1 DO NOT OPEN YOUR M&M’s!!!!

M&M Distribution and Nutrition Lab – Part 1 DO NOT OPEN YOUR M&M’s!!!! Work on the hypothesis as a class. Since this is the first one of the year they will need more help. It should look something like “I predict that there will be enough evidence to dispute the claim of distribution by mass.” or “I predict that there will not be enough evidence to dispute the claim of distribution by mass.”

M&M Distribution and Nutrition Lab – Part 1 DO NOT OPEN YOUR M&M’s!!!!

Erase individual student data between classes. Have the students calculate PE after all class percentages have been filled in.

M&M Distribution and Nutrition Lab – Part 2 Calculating Percent Error Example Calculation: (P – E) X 100 E (28 – 20) X 100 20 (8) X 100 0.4 X 100 40% Formula  (P – E) X 100 E Example Description: The M&M company states that every bag of M&Ms should contain 20% blue M&Ms When you counted the M&Ms in your bag, you calculated that your bag has 28% blue M&Ms = https://docs.google.com/a/irvingisd.net/spreadsheets/d/1Z1wQ6AI2dnjlYl3Gd_TnjHPXWH-uMJnZkgLU1b-QKb0/edit?usp=sharing Open the class data on a separate Chromebook - have students enter their individual data as they finish then click UPDATE on this slide to show the final results. Erase individual student data between classes. Have the students calculate PE after all class percentages have been filled in.

M&M Distribution and Nutrition Lab – Part 2 Discuss what the independent & dependent variables are for this experiment. Once you have come to the satisfactory conclusion (IV=Color DV=Percent) continue to the next slide.

M&M Distribution and Nutrition Lab – Part 2 COLOR PERCENT Give the students 1 minute to go back through the lab and highlight every place the IV and DV are mentioned.

M&M Distribution and Nutrition Lab – Part 3 How is energy content measured in food? What types of food give us the most energy?

M&M Distribution and Nutrition Lab – Part 3 Review what IV & DV are and the acronym DRY MIX

Calories Grams of Carb/Lipid/Protein M&M Distribution and Nutrition Lab – Part 3 M&M Variety Calories Grams of Carb/Lipid/Protein Give students 1 minute to highlight the IV & DV same as before
