How Illustrations Contribute to the Meaning of a Story

Illustrations are more than pictures on a page Illustrations are used to : Affect how a reader feels when they are reading Show what is happening Give the reader extra details they don’t have

How does the author create mood from the cover page? Color Depth Tone

Why are illustrations important? The way we react and have feelings about the characters or setting based on the text or illustrations, helps up relate to the text. Pictures help us visualize the text better.

Ask Yourself What is happening? How does this make me feel? What is the author trying to say?

How does she create “wonder” within the story? How does R.J. Palacio create “wonder” by just looking at the cover page? How does she create “wonder” within the story?
