Chapter 6 Lesson 5 Pollution & Conservation Pages 294-301

An environment is all the living and nonliving things in an area.

A healthy environment has clean air, water, and land.

Pollution is the harmful or unwanted material that has been added to the environment.

Most pollution comes from human activity.

Acid rain forms when we burn fossil fuels Acid rain forms when we burn fossil fuels. It is made from gases and bits of dust combining with water droplets in the air.

Smog is formed when water vapor, other gases, and dust combine and hang in the air. Smog makes the air dangerous and hard to breath.

Water pollution can kill plants and animals that rely on the water for survival.

It can be caused by people dumping wastes into the water It can be caused by people dumping wastes into the water. It can also be caused by fertilizers and pesticides washing into water supplies.

People littering causes land pollution People littering causes land pollution. Land pollution can be ugly and harmful to plants and animals.

People can protect our resources by using them wisely People can protect our resources by using them wisely. This is called conservation.

Soil conservation are methods farmers use to slow erosion to keep soil in place to support plants.

There are many ways to conserve water. Can you list some?

Three ways to conserve resources are called the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

To reduce means to use less of something.

To reuse means to use something over again.

To recycle means to make new products from old materials.
