The Big Picture Behind New.FamilySearch

Storm Clouds in Family History! 1. Finding Names In 1959, most temples were only open for 2 sessions per day. Why? Not enough family names were available from the patrons or the Gen. Dept. Women could only do an endowment session if they brought a family name.

2. The Time required to Clear Names From 1922 on, all family names had to be cleared through the Temple Index Burea. Processing names through the Gen. Dept. sometimes took up to 2 years. In 1961, 42% of family group sheets were rejected; 26% were duplicates.

3. Duplication of Ordinances Experience of Harry Russell in early 1900’s. In 1943, during the first six months, 546,000 names were checked at the Index Bureau—211,00 had been previously completed! Analogy: Like kissing your girlfriend’s picture—does something for you but nothing for her!. In 2005, President Hinckley expressed his concern with this problem in General Conference.

"One of the most troublesome aspects of our temple activity is that as we get more and more temples scattered across the earth there is duplication of effort in proxy work. People in various nations simultaneously work on the same family lines and come up with the same names. They do not know that those in other areas are doing the same thing." (President Gordon B. Hinckley, "Opening Remarks," Ensign, Nov. 2005, 5–6)

4. Too Many Steps Required for Ordinance Submission!

Sixteen Steps! Former Process for Preparing Family Names for the Temple Simplified Process for Preparing Family Names for the Temple 1. Enter information into PAF. Home Family History Center Temple 2. Select individuals to do temple work for. 3. Check ordinance dates against FamilySearch records. 4. Create a GEDCOM or backup file. 5. Write the GEDCOM or backup file to disk. 6. Take the disk to a family history center. 7. Run the GEDCOM or backup through TempleReady for updates. 8. Manually search the Internet IGI for updated information. 9. Process names in TempleReady. 10. Fix any errors, and reprocess in TempleReady. 11. Create a TempleReady file. 12. Write a TempleReady file to disk. 13. Take the TempleReady disk to the temple. 14. The temple prints cards for ordinance work. 15. Do the work; wait for the IGI updates. 16. Update PAF with the new ordinance information.

5. Responsibility for Redeeming the Dead (Family) shifted OFF of the shoulders of Church members. By the church supplying Temple File Names, too many members go to the temple to do another family’s temple work and forget their own ancestral family! One person calls this “Temple Welfare!”

The Lord performs Miracles

Not Enough Names? 1) In 1962, a new approach was usedto supply names to the temples. Names could be “harvested” from the Granite Mountain Record Vault.

Granite Mountain Vault Collection Statistics 3 billion record images Genealogical records from 105 countries Generally records date from 1700 to 1950 Some pedigrees date back to 1200-800 B.C. 12 billion individual names (estimated) Today, the Church as amassed by far the largest and most complete genealogical collection in the world: Global, not just economically profitable Note: National Archives public collection is 1/5 the size

The stakes were asked to participate in this process, called Name Extraction, in February, 1978. To Create Temple File Names

Too Much Time to Clear Names? 2) With TempleReady in 1991, church members could clear and process family names through local FH Centers. Now, with New.FamilySearch, names are cleared in their own homes—immediately! Family Ordinance Request (FOR)

Duplication of Ordinances? Common Pedigree Data Base I.G.I. (Temple Ordinances) Other Church Data Bases: -Ancestral File -Pedigree Resource file -SS Death Index Create an Internet, One-Site Data Base

Duplication of Ordinances? Common Pedigree Data Base A FOR request

Duplication of Ordinances? Common Pedigree Data Base A FOR request instantly blocks any other request! Other requests denied!

NewFamilySearch = 5 steps! 16 Steps vs. 5 Steps! NewFamilySearch = 5 steps! 1. Add ancestor information into the new FamilySearch, at home or Family History Center 2. Select individuals to do temple work for. 3. Print a Family Ordinance Request, and take it to the temple. 4. The temple recorder prints cards while you wait. 5. Perform the temple ordinances; the new FamilySearch is updated the same day.
