Target: Find the value of expressions using the order of operations.

Vocabulary Order of Operations: Rules to follow when evaluating an expression with more than one operation.

Order of Operations Find the value of expressions inside grouping symbols such as parentheses and fraction bars. Find the value of all powers. Multiply and divide from left to right. Add and subtract from left to right.

Example 1a Find the value of the expression. 4(−5 + 3) – 7 4(−2) – 7 −8 – 7 −15

Example 1b Find the value of the expression. 27 – (1 + 3)2 ÷ 2 27 – (4)2 ÷ 2 27 – 16 ÷ 2 27 – 8 19

Example 2a Find the value of the expression.

Example 2b Find the value of the expression.

Exit Problems Find the value of each expression.

Communication Prompt Why do you think there is an order of operations in mathematics?
