M EDIEVAL A RCHITECTURE By: Sophia and Maribeth

H OUSES Medieval houses were very different from Roman houses in several ways. One important change was that more people lived in small villages for safety, instead of in farmhouses on their own land. Another change was that more people in northern Europe used fireplaces and chimneys to heat their houses and to cook on, instead of an open fire pit in the middle of the room.

CASTLES IN THE MIDDLE AGES Castles in the middle ages were built for kings and sometimes lords. They usually had a wall around the and they were highly protected only a few times they were overtaken.

Castle comes from the Latin word fortress. Kings lived in castles for protection. Usually very big.

Castles would have a trench, known as a moat. They would have little windows for arrow protection. Very thickly built for any attack.

The keep is where the lords lived. Vassals lived here. Serfs worked for the lords in manors.

Serfs worked non stop. They had very little food. Were not treated very fairly.

Peasants houses in this period did not last. Peasants shared it with the animals. They one room homes. It was made of sticks, straw and mud

With more money they could afford better housing. Many now lived in wattle and daub houses. They were taller then the simple straw house.

These Medieval houses of the rich. These house were made of brick. The brick was expensive. They had tiles and some time chimneys.
