Quinta da Costeira (Costeira Farm) in Oliveira de Azeméis It is a Marian sanctuary and it was the residence of the Coimbra bishop-count back in the 19 th century with a relevant architectural, historical and cultural value.

Teresa Correia ( ), the bishop-counts sister, was married to Manoel Francisco Portal. Nowadays, the huge property belongs to the children of the well-known doctor Abel Portal and his German wife Edith. They are Teresa Correias grandchildren.

These are traces of the primitive, simple and traditional rural house which was the headquarters of the farm (Quinta da Costeira), where António Correia de Bastos Pina lived. Back then he was already considered the wealthy rural owner of the Carregosa parish and the President of Oliveira de Azeméis City Council.

President of Oliveira de Azeméis City Council António Correia de Bastos Pina (1852 – 1854) He is the Coimbra bishop-counts father. Short biography: The bishop-count was born on the 19 th November 1830 and died on the 19 th November He was the 22 nd Arganil count and the 57 th Coimbra bishop from 1872 until 1913.

Manuel Correia de Bastos Pina, the future bishop, took a degree in Law at the Coimbra University. He was a lawyer for several years. He was the only enthroned bishop without any degree in Theology.

Manuel Correia de Bastos Pina, Coimbra bishop and Arganil count The Bragança bishop ordained him a priest (when he was 24 years) and named him vicar of that diocese. In Viseu he was named chapter vicar in 1859, the diocese governor in 1865 and Coimbra bishop in 1872.

King Manuel II The bishop-count was the godfather of King Manuel II, the 35 th and last king of Portugal. King Manuel II was in Carregosa on the 24 th July 1910, and in a very special way he visited Manuel Correia de Bastos Pina in Costeira Farm.

The old rural house inherited by the bishop-count from his father was enlarged as a result of the demand to deal with the important social requests and the facility to take advantage from local qualified workforce. Costeira Farm

The influence of the bishop-count in societys life He created the Religious Art Museum in the cathedral, which is still one of the most important nuclei of the Machado Castro Museum nowadays. The Religious Art Museum is a Bastos Pinas attempt to save most of the art from convents and some churches.

The restoration of Coimbra Old Cathedral was possible thanks to three special people: António Augusto Gonçalves, Manuel Bastos Pina and Queen Amélia. There were several bishop-counts campaigns for public health. He was one of the greatest Queen Amélias supporters in the Tuberculosis case. He also wrote pastoral texts about hygiene habits, including those inside churches and defended the burial in cemeteries. Social concern was also referred to in his Episcopal munus. As a consequence of the significant world echo of Lourdes Sanctuary, the bishop-count builds a cave in his residence in the farm in honour of Lourdes apparitions, with images of Our Lady and the young Bernardette Soubirous.

With the introduction of the republican regime and the death of the bishop- count in 1913, the sanctuary became a place for local religious use. It is still used for festivities in honour of Our Lady of Lourdes on the first Sunday of August. The influence of the bishop-count in societys life

When the Republic was established, Manuel Bastos Pina left Coimbra to the house he had built in Quinta da Costeira and stayed there for a long time. When he went back to Coimbra, the Episcopal palace had already been occupied. Therefore, he had to accept his nephews host. The poet Eugénio de Castro was his nephew.
