DO NOW What stood out to you about “Common Sense”? What did you notice about Paine’s use of pronouns? What kind of language or vocabulary did he use to portray unity? How did he seem to feel about people who opposed his view point? Anything else?

Make sure you’ve finished this: When you are done, complete the following in your notes – Title it: Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense”: In your own words: What does Thomas Paine argue are the problems with the current government structure in the colonies? What reasons does Paine give as to why the colonies should become independent? If EVERYONE at your table has finished, then go around your group and share what you wrote. I will be calling on people to share their information with the class.

Summarizing Now time to write a summary What should come in the first sentence of your summary? Title of document, author’s name, main idea of document How do we use what you took in your notes in the rest of your summary? What should we not forget to include in your summary? Transition terms and power verbs

Peer Edit and Revision When checking your peers work, look for: Whether or not they have included all of the major points covered in the document Whether or not they include the name and title of the author Whether or not they include power verbs when needed Whether or not their transitions are smooth Feel free to provide them suggestions Once you get your summary back, feel free to revise and rewrite it
