Coastal Features Headlands and Bays A headland is an area of land which juts out to sea and is surrounded by sea on three sides. Headlands form in coastlines.

Presentation transcript:

Go through and highlight important information. Erosion Hydraulic Action- power of the waves forces into cracks causing the rock to break apart. Solution-dissolves. Attrition-rocks bash together become smaller. Abrasion-rocks rub against the cliffs. Corrasion-rocks are thrown at the cliffs deposition Sand Beaches are flat and wide and made from deposition. Shingle beaches are steep and narrow. Spits- form at a bend in the coastline. Longshore drift moves the sand in a zig-zag pattern the sand is deposited and sticks out from the coastline like a finger. When the wind changes direction the spit curves at the end, this is known as a curve.. Salt marsh forms behind the spit as it is sheltered Bars- When a spit joins 2 headlands together a bar is formed. Behind is a lagoon is formed blocked off from the sea. Transportation Traction-rocks and pebbles rolled along the sea bed Saltation- Little bits of rock or pebbles are bounced along the sea bed. Suspension-tiny particles carried along in the middle of the sea. Solution- sea salt and other chemicals in the water will dissolve the rock like sugar in tea, but it is still there.
