4 How is material transported downstream?
Boulders and pebbles are rolled along the river bed at times of high discharge. Traction Sand sized particles are bounced along the river bed by the flow of water. Saltation Fine clay and sand particles are carried along within the water even at low discharges. Suspension Some minerals dissolve in water such as calcium carbonate. 5 Impact of sub-aerial processes
Answers: 1 Vegetation can protect the cliff face but its roots can also grow into cracks and widen them. This is a type of Biological Weathering. 2 Rocks such as clay become saturated with water. The rock is weakened and mudflows occur . this is a type of mass movement. 3 Exposed rock faces can be broken up by ice, or heat and cold. For example, repeated freezing and thawing of water in rock cracks weakens the rock. This is physical weathering. 4 Rock falls are a very sudden type of mass movement. The sea can use these boulders to erode the cliff further. 5 Salt crystals can penetrate the exposed rock face. Where there are rocks containing iron oxidation can occur, causing it to ‘rust’. This is chemical weathering.

6 Processes of erosion Attrition
Materials carried by the waves bump into each other and so are smoothed and broken down into smaller particles. Hydraulic action This process involves the force of water against the coast. The waves enter cracks (faults) in the coastline and compress the air within the crack. When the wave retreats, the air in the crack expands quickly, causing a minor explosion. This process is repeated continuously. Corrosion This is the chemical action of sea water. The acids in the salt water slowly dissolve rocks on the coast. Limestone and chalk are particularly prone to this process. Abrasion/Corrasion This is the process by which the coast is worn down by material carried by the waves. Waves throw these particles against the rock, sometimes at high velocity.

7 How are beaches formed? Beaches form in sheltered environments, such as bays. When the swash is stronger than the backwash, deposition occurs. Sometimes sand from offshore bars can be blown onto the shore by strong winds. In such cases dunes may form – such as at Studland on the Dorset Coast.

10 Managed Retreat Managed retreat is also known as managed realignment.
It involves breaching an existing coastal defence, such as a sea wall, and allowing the land behind to be flooded. This land is then left to be colonised by saltmarsh vegetation. When established, the vegetation disperses wave energy, reduces erosion rates and provides new habitats. The first attempt at managed retreat in the UK was on Northey Island, located in the Blackwater Estuary in Essex. Hold the Line is where you maintain the current coastal defences despite mounting repair costs as usually the land behind it is valuable environmentally and/or economically.
