The Swedish National Forest Inventory A nationwide inventory of the Swedish forest

The Swedish NFI… an annual systematic cluster sample inventory comprises all land and lake area in Sweden includes all ownership categories has been carried out since 1923 also inventories nature reserves and national parks is a part of the Official Statistics of Sweden is carried out by the Department of Forest Resource Management, SLU, Umeå

Objectives of the inventory Supply data for strategic planning of forestry utilisation on a regional level as well as for the whole country Supply data for monitoring environmental status Supply data for research and education

What is inventoried? Land use Growing stock and growth Forest age and structure Condition of forest sites and vegetation Harvesting and other forestry measures Browsing damages and other damages Prerequisites for biodiversity

Land use Examples: Forest land Grazing land Non productive land, such as mires and rock surface Arable land, roads, urban land and power lines Nature reserves and national parks

Growing stock and growth Examples: Volume of different tree species Number of trees Recorded growth and growth adjusted to normal weather conditions

Forest age and structure Examples: Stand age Tree layers Mean height Density Maturity class Tree species composition

Condition of forest sites and vegetation Examples: Vegetation type Presence of selected plant species Site index class Soil moisture Mineral soil or peat land

Harvesting and other forestry measures Examples: Final felling Thinning Precommercial thinning Soil scarification Planting / seed trees

Prerequisites for biodiversity Examples: Dead wood Old forest Older forest with high proportion of deciduous trees Shrubs Large trees

Survey regions 5 4 3 1 2

Tract distribution One year sample (year 2004) Temporary tracts (530 tracts) Permanent tracts (852 tracts)
