2012 Highlights GSS-12: Global Standards Symposium, WTSA-12: World Telecommunications Standardization Assembly, WCIT-12: World Conference on International Telecommunications,

WTSA-12 New Resolutions Software Defined Networking, Res. 77 Study Group 11 and 13, TSAG Workshop e-Health, Res. 78 Study Group 16 e-waste, Res. 79 Study Group 5 Strategic and structural review of ITU-T, Res. 82 Review Committee (RevCom)

WCIT-12 Key Achievements The ITRs include provisions for: improving transparency in mobile roaming charges improving energy efficiency and cutting e-waste ensuring the security and robustness of international telecommunication networks combating unsolicited bulk electronic communications (spam) preventing misuse of numbering resources bringing the benefit of ICTs to the 650 million people living with some kind of disability improving broadband connectivity to landlocked developing countries and small island states; improving access to emergency services.

Active Focus Groups Smart Sustainable Cities Smart Cable Television Bridging the Standardization Gap from Innovation to Standards Disaster Relief Systems, Network Resilience and Recovery M2M Service Layer Audiovisual Media Accessibility From/In/To Cars Communication II

Strategic Direction Develop international standards new areas: SDN, e-Health, e-waste Bridge the Standardization Gap to increase the participation of developing countries in ITU-T’s work 12 regional groups in total. Collaborate Hosting IEEE 802 Plenary in July in Geneva Joint Workshops and meetings with other SDOs

Challenges GSS addressed two particular challenges resulting from the convergence and the integration of ICT into traditional industries: With convergence, the traditional demarcation between the work of different standards bodies is becoming blurred, and ICT standardization is no longer limited to the confines of the ICT industry but must now work with other industry sectors to develop new global standards for new services.

Next Steps / Actions WTSA-12 established a new Review Committee as a forum with the time to discuss issues seriously and come up with suggestions on how ITU-T, as the only truly global ICT standards body, can best ensure that it remains the place to come to develop international standards.

Upcoming Events Disaster Relief Systems, Network Resilience and Recovery 20 May, Phuket Thailand RevCom meeting 3 June Geneva SDN workshop, 4 June, Geneva ITS joint ITU/UNECE Workshop, 26 June, Geneva Countering and combating spam workshop, 8 July, Durbin South Africa Environmentally Sound Management of E-waste workshop, 9 July, Durbin South Africa Joint IEEE/ITU Workshop on Ethernet, 13 July, Geneva
