Area under a velocity-time graph Car travelling at 70 mph for 2 hours Area = This is the distance travelled, 140 miles 2  70 = 140 v mph t hours
Objectives: 1.Be able to distinguish between distance and displacement 2.Explain the difference between speed and velocity 3.Be able to interpret motion.
 Acceleration is the rate that velocity changes over time.  An object is accelerating if ◦ Its speed changes ◦ Its direction changes ◦ Both its speed.

STARTER During a road trip, in 6 hours you travel 300 miles. What is your average velocity? Average Velocity = distance travelled/time taken = 300 miles/6.

Acceleration. The rate of change in velocity Acceleration The rate of change in velocity Examples…. –Speeding up Positive acceleration –Slowing down.
 You can use weighted averages to solve uniform motion problems when the objects you are considering are moving at constant rates or speeds.
Need for (More) Speed. Of course not every object is going to travel the same VELOCITY all the time.
5.5: Speeding up and Slowing down
1. What distance will a train stop in if its initial velocity is 23 m/s and its acceleration is m/s/s? 1058 m xvivfatxvivfat.
Motion Graphs Position vs. time. Vocabulary Position Where you are relative to the origin (reference point/observer) Distance The total length of how.
What is acceleration? – Probably heard it mean: “the process of speeding up” – More specifically: the rate at which velocity changes. Remember that velocity.
Linear Motion with Constant Acceleration. Effects of acceleration Object ’ s speed changes every second, therefore the distance covered each second is.

#13 Speed and Momentum. Speed Depends on Distance and Time speed – the rate at which an object moves speed depends on the distance traveled and the time.
CH. 2 NOTES Abbreviated. Distance vs. Displacement Distance – how far an object travels (meters) Displacement – straight line path between two points.

Real or Ridiculous??!!

This object is moving at a constant speed.

RIDICULOUS. This graph shows an object at rest RIDICULOUS!!!! This graph shows an object at rest. A horizontal line on a Distance vs. Time graph represents an object’s distance is not changing.

This object is accelerating.

REAL!!!!!!

This object is traveling at a constant speed.

REAL!!!!!

This object is decelerating.

RIDICULOUS!!!!!!! This graph is showing an object traveling at a constant speed toward the starting point.

This object is not moving. It is at rest.

RIDICULOUS. This graph shows an object moving at a constant speed RIDICULOUS!!!!!! This graph shows an object moving at a constant speed. The horizontal line is showing that the object’s speed is not increasing or decreasing

This object is accelerating.

REAL!!!!!!!!

This object is accelerating, then it stays at a constant speed, and then finally it decelerates.

RIDICULOUS. This is a distance vs. time graph RIDICULOUS!!!!! This is a distance vs. time graph. The object is traveling at a constant speed away from the starting point, then staying at rest, and then traveling at a constant speed back toward the starting point.

A dog is walking at 1 mile per hour.  Acceleration?

It takes an hour to travel 60 miles.  Speed

A flock of geese are flying east at 30 miles per hour Acceleration

A car changes its speed from 60 mph to 70 mph. Velocity

While travelling west, two cats cover three miles in two hours.  Speed

After reaching the top of the coaster, the cars increased their speed as they fell.  Acceleration

A car travels from 60 to 100 mph A car travels from 60 to 100 mph. This is an example of positive acceleration

A person slows down during a race from 5 m/s to 2 m/s A person slows down during a race from 5 m/s to 2 m/s. This is an example of negative acceleration.
