1 5.5: Speeding up and Slowing down

2 A particle’s velocity is given by the graph to the right.
m/s a) Find when the particle is moving to the left. sec b) Find when the particle changes direction c) Find when the particle is at rest.

3 A particle’s velocity is given by the graph to the right.
d) How would you find the acceleration using the graph at any point? e) Find the average acceleration from t=1 to t=2.5

4 I am driving in my car going 60 mph down the highway and I accelerate
I am driving in my car going 60 mph down the highway and I accelerate. Am I speeding up or slowing down? I am driving in my car going 60 mph down the highway and I decelerate. Am I speeding up or slowing down?

5 Steps to speeding up or slowing down
1. Check the velocity and acceleration at the point given 2. if they are the same sign then it’s speeding up opposite sign then it’s slowing down.

6 The formula gives the position of a particle at any given point.
Is the particle speeding up or slowing down at the given times? t=2 t=1

7 The graph is a velocity time graph of a particle at any given point.
Is the particle speeding up or slowing down at the given times. m/s t=1 t=2 sec t=3 t=4 t=5
