Learning Intentions Understand why emotional intelligence is vital for overall well-being Consider a toolbox of strategies to manage emotions Set personal well-being goals for Term 2.

Emotional intelligence is vitally important for overall wellbeing. Emotional intelligence is a key predictor for success in work and life

What is emotional intelligence? Emotional intelligence is vital for managing our well-being and is a key predictor for success in work and life. Self- awareness: The ability to recognise, feel and accept your own emotions and understand triggers. Emotions help us evaluate our experiences. Empathy The ability to recognise emotions in others Emotional Regulation (Resilience, Coping skills) The ability to manage your emotions so that you can continue to focus your attention on meeting your goals and living your values

We need to manage our emotions to enhance our well-being; help us meet our goals, build relationships, experience positive emotions. To do this we need strategies to shift our emotional state to a place that will serve us best. Research shows that when we are highly stressed, our attention shifts away from our goals. Increased cortisol and adrenaline, over time, actually changes the size, structure and function of the brain. It inhibits use the pre-frontal cortex- impacting on our memory, attention, ability to make decisions and cope with adversity.

What effective strategies can you use to refocus if you are feeling stressed?

What ineffective strategies do you use that may keep you feeling stressed?
