Impact of gold-salt trade on western Africa

Importance of salt Salt was important because it helped them preserve their food. It also gave their food flavor. It helped heal people. The Sahara contained deposits of salt. Workers build their houses from salt blocks because no other materials were available.

Importance of gold Gold was important because it was used as money. Gold came from forest region south of savanna between Niger. Miners dug Gold from shafts as deep as 100 feet.
