Time Zones by Megan Sawford

There are 24 different time zones. Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) is used as standard time. It covers London, Lisbon and Casablanca. Imagine you are looking at a map. Go right from GMT and you add an hour every zone. Go left from GMT and you take away an hour every zone. On the opposite side of the Greenwich Meridian is the international date line. Fun fact: If you travel across the International Date Line the day after your birthday, you can have your birthday again on that day.

If we didn’t have Time Zones It would be day and night at different times in different parts of the world. Travellers, military and air crew would get confused about the time, light and when their bodies need sleep. It would be the same date the whole world round and that’s just boring!
