Time Zones What time zone do you live in????

2 Can you Figure this out????? 360 Degrees 24 WOW GREAT JOB 
How many time zones are in this world? Before you guess, let me ask you this.. How many degrees make a circle? 360 Degrees If each line of longitude is 15 degrees apart, how many time zones do we have in our world? 24 WOW GREAT JOB 

3 What are time zones? Time Zones are:
Defined by lines on Longitude (places that have the same longitude will be in the same time zone) Broken into 15 Degree Increments Each 15 Degree span represents ONE hour.. There are 24 Time Zones in our World (corresponding to 24 hours in a day) As the earth rotates, the sun shines in different areas, moving from east to west during the course of a day. Time is Measured from the Naval Observatory in Greenwich England. This is at 0 Degrees Longitude.

7 What is the International Date Line and why is it important?
The International Date Line is a special time zone boundary, most of it following the line of longitude 180°. The International Date Line sits on the 180º line of longitude in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and is the imaginary line that separates two consecutive calendar days.

8 Immediately to the left of the International Date Line (the date) is always one day ahead of the date (or day) immediately to the right of the International Date Line in the Western Hemisphere. Basically, it’s the same time but a day apart.. IDL is the dividing line for the Western and Eastern Hemisphere..

9 Western Hemisphere Eastern Hemisphere Western Hemisphere

10 NORTHERN HEMISPHERE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

11 EASTERN HEMISPHERE WESTERN HEMISPHERE

12 International Date Line
On the time and date codes shown below, note that Tonga and Samoa have the same time but are one day apart, as Samoa is in the Western Hemisphere, on the opposite side of the International Dateline from Tonga. International Date Line So, travel east across the International Date Line results in a day, or 24 hours, being subtracted. Travel west across the International Date Line results in a day being added. Fiji Sun. Sept. 4:03 UTC Tonga Sun. Sept. 5:03 UTC Samoa Sat. Sept. 5:03 UTC Hawaii Sat., Sept. 6:03 UTC

13 Japanese war planes bombed Pearl Harbor on Hawaii on December 7, 1941, and in doing so, pushed the US into war against Japan.     Japanese war planes bombed US bases in the Philippine Islands on December 8. Why did they wait an extra day? They didn't! Hawaii is on the other side of the date line from the Philippines. Actually the attacks occurred on the same day.

14 December 8th JAPAN December 7th

15 What is Daylight Savings Time?
During the summer, when the Sun rises earlier, we make use of the extra daylight by shifting our clocks by one hour--e.g., what was labeled 6 am in the winter is now called 7 am. Each day people get up earlier (also go to sleep earlier) and enjoy sunlight for a longer time. We will Fall Back an hour on November 4th! Yay! An extra hour of REST!!!! 
