A. Stalin Gains Control Lenin dies in 1924 Both Leon Trotsky and Joseph Stalin want to gain control of the nation

Joseph Stalin becomes the next premier Really a dictator Trotsky is exiled and flees to Mexico

1st goal of Stalin’s was to make the USSR into a modern industrial power Did NOT worry about the military

B. Building a Totalitarian State Totalitarianism – a government that controls every public and private aspect of life Stalin turns the U.S.S.R. into a totalitarian state
