This is my mother. Emilia was her name. She died when I was 8 This is my mother. Emilia was her name. She died when I was 8. My brother died when I was 12. My dad died when I was 21. I knew God loved them in heaven and he loves me and all of you too.

I was a happy youngster. I liked football, swimming and tried to be a good pupil.

God and my prayers were always important to me.

I lived through the horrors of the Second World War I lived through the horrors of the Second World War. When I could not go to the seminary because of the Nazis, I studied in secret.

In 1978 I was chosen to be Pope and then my life changed again.

One day I was shot..

I almost died..

But with the help of God and Our Lady, I got better… …and forgave
