Let’s talk about this again…

Governor General and Lieutenant Governors These are the Queen Representatives in Canada and the Provinces. The Governor General has no real power. Some argue if this role is needed. Let’s talk about the role.

The Senate The Senate is one of the two houses of the legislature of Canada. Senators are appointed by the Governor-General.

Reform Some want to senate reformed. They are usually politicians that retire. Are appointed by the government. Is it democratic?

Canadian charter of Rights and Freedoms Guarantees certain rights for all Canadians. Remember we talked about Freedom of Speech. Do we really have complete freedom of speech? The government has the right to limit rights in order to protect the Common good.

Not withstanding clause A clause in the Charter that allows the government to limit freedoms or go against the rights. For a limited time, up to 5 years.

Some Examples (do note write this) Fundamental Freedoms: freedom on conscience, religion, belief, opinion, etc… Mobility right: the right to work and travel in all parts of Canada. Democratic: the right to vote, run in elections, and join political parties.

Promoting Political and Economic Rights Before the Charter, not all Canadian were equal. Let’s look at this development on page 350.

Canada’s Multiculturalism Act Passed in 1988 Promotes multiculturalism in Canada. In 1971, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that Canada would become a multicultural nation. The first nation to ever do so.

Language Rights The Charter makes and holds both French and English as official languages. Let’s talk about an French driver in Alberta. Let’s talk about French sign laws.

Well, let’s move on to Chapter 14 Please keep in mind that I DO NOT know what will be on the Diploma. Please review the text book as well as the notes!

Reflecting on Liberalism We all experience and enjoy liberalism even if we are unaware of it. We are talking about the government in this class. We express ourselves. We go where we want and consider ourselves of value.

Limited Liberalism We’ve talked about the War Measures Act: What was it? Is it proper? Does the government have the right to do this? Remember it only happened 3 times: WW1, WW2, and the October Crisis in Quebec.

When it was used Passed in 1914 during WW1, any people thought to support the Germans, Austrians, or Ukraine were detained. Almost 8000. During WW2 Germans, Italian, and Japanese were detained. We have Japanese detainment camps in Canada.

Canada During WW1, Racism and Ultranationalism became more prevalent in Canada. Thousands of German and Ukrainian Canadians are interned. During WW2, Canadian Propaganda depicted the German, Italian, and Japanese as enemy. Subsequently, Canadians of these dissents are persecuted.

Canada Japanese Canadians could not vote or have certain positions. After Pearl Harbor it got worse. 1942 – Japanese Canadians are placed in Internment Camps. Homes, Property, and Business are seized and sold.

The Emergency Act Replaced the War Measures act in 88’ Same outcome however the government is still subject to the charter. Must meet within 7 days to determine if an actually emergency exists or if the government has the right to take away rights.

Anti-Terrorism Act Passed in December 2001. Makes detention legal if terrorism is suspected / detected. Gave the government surveillance rights. Give the government the ability to preventative arrest. Much like the Patriot Act (not as strong!)

Stats, profiling, and Racism They use statistics to create a profile. The Patriot act uses profiling to determine likely terrorist. This can often lead to racism.
