Southend Carers Presentation 27th June 2017

Who are we?

What is Carer? Within the borough of Southend-on-Sea it is estimated that there are approximately 17,500 people whose lives are affected by the need to provide care and support to another member of their family. Supporting a parent or a sibling, a child, partner, loved one or friend, thousands are dealing with a range of situations such as mental health difficulties, drug and alcohol misuse, chronic illness and disability. And for over 18 years, Southend Carers has been here to ensure that these Carers are supported in their caring role.

Did you know…? The 2001 Census reported 15,973 carers in the borough of Southend, now evidencing an increase of 11% in the last 10 years to the now 17,682. Evidence Shows that: 10% of people in Southend-On-Sea provide unpaid care for someone. 60% of carers in Southend-On-Sea have health problems. 63% of the people being cared for by unpaid carers are aged over sixty-five. 24% of unpaid carers in Southend-on-Sea have been caring for 2 years or more. By 2020, the number of Southend-on-Sea residents aged eighty-five or over is expected to increase by 16% of the 2012 total; compared to only a 2% increase of residents ages between 18 and 65.

Why do Carers need support? Taking on a caring role can mean facing a life of poverty, isolation, frustration, ill health and depression. Many carers give up an income, future employment prospects and pension rights to become a carer. The carers struggle to have the retirement they planned for. Many carers also work outside the home and are trying to juggle jobs with their responsibilities as carers. Carers say that access to information, financial support and breaks in caring are vital in helping them manage the impact of caring on their lives.
