Talk to your partner and retell what has happened in the story up to this point. Next, read over your predictions that you recorded yesterday in your journal. Can you think of a good question, to ask at this point in the story? Let’s see what I predicted yesterday.

Sometimes our predictions happen and sometimes they don’t. When they happen the way we predict we call that being confirmed. When they don’t happen we call that disproved.

9 Was it confirmed or disproved? Prediction Page number Pa will leave for the Ford ranch to get a new cow. Clues: Pa is packing his bags. 9

I am going to read Chapter 5 aloud. I will follow the steps of prediction on my Predicting Strategy Card. I will stop after each page to ask myself what will happen next, and then make a prediction. I will also make a final prediction at the end of the chapter and write it down. Let’s listen to pages 14and 15.

Page 14 Dark clouds are forming. That usually means it’s going to rain. I predict there will be a storm.

Page 15 The sky has turned green. Prairie Belle’s father has said that when the sky turns green, a tornado is coming. So I predict a tornado is going to strike.

15 Prediction Page number Confirmed or Disproved A tornado is going to strike. Clues: dark clouds are forming and the sky is turning green and Pa said that means a tornado is coming 15

When you write your predictions at the end of your passage today, be sure to include the clues you used to make them.

Let’s preview the questions. Team Talk Let’s preview the questions. 1.Look at your prediction from Day 1 and 2. Have any more events that you predicted actually happpened, that is were they confirmed? Write it down on your Predictions chart and explain how you know. 2. What does Prairie Belle compare the tornado to in order to describe its sound? 3. How much damage does the tornado do? 4. Share your new (Day 3) prediction with your team. Discuss the clues that you used to make the prediction.

Class Discussion What words did your group clarify?

At the end of the passage I read today, I predicted that a tornado would strike. After reading on to see what happened next, that’s exactly what happened. A tornado did strike. Luckily, Prairie made it through the tornado. This prediction was confirmed, so I’ll put “confirmed” on my chart.

Were any of your predictions confirmed? Can you give me a new prediction for today’s passage?

Do you think Prairie acted well during the tornado Do you think Prairie acted well during the tornado? How do you think you would have acted?
