Presentation transcript:

Welcome Back! Spring 2014 Welcome back everyone – hope you had good holidays and are ready to tackle the spring semester. I have a very short presentation on some CCSSE Data but before I get going I did want to mention just a few things: 1.) Governance – going to add Career Staff and Professional staff to our extended Ex Team 2.) New Building 3. Faculty Senate info Carl? Now on to CCSSE – turn slide

CCSSE What is CCSSE- Community College Survey of Student Engagement? Why do we administer it? Provides college specific data with benchmark comparisons between Valencia and other top-performing colleges. It provides aspects of highest and lowest student engagement practices. Why use the CCFSSE? Explores the extent faculty use identified promising practices in their teaching and compares what students think versus what faculty think about the utilization of these practices. http://valenciacollege.edu/academic-affairs/institutional-effectiveness-planning/institutional-assessment/surveys/documents/CCFSSE2013StudentandFacultyNationalCohortFrequencies_000.pdf Why wanted to share CCSSE – faculty had said that they had administered the survey but then never heard about the data… Go over slide What are the major benchmark areas the data explores – change slides

CCSSE Benchmarks Active and collaborative learning Student effort Academic challenge Student-faculty interaction Support for learners

Example of Overall Valencia Data, 2013 CCSSE Cohort and Top Performers

Valencia College Aspects of Highest Student Engagement Shows some of the specific questions where we are higher than our CCSSE cohort colleges

East & WP Highest We are on par with making class presentations and worked with classmates outside of class, and encouraging contact with students from different economic/racial groups, etc. We are even higher with Peer Tutoring and frequency of Skills labs use So let’s take a look at some of our lowest score areas – first at the college level and then see on how East & WP faired

Valencia College Aspects of Lowest Engagement Now let’s look and see where East & WP were exactly with these same low scores – change slide

East & WP Lowest Remember these are all areas where we scored lower than the cohort colleges. Those include low on community based projects as part of regular courses, talked about career plans, discussed ideas outside of class with an instructor, and of course advising comes up again Change slide

How we can use the data to focus attention Website for the complete report http://valenciacollege.edu/academic-affairs/institutional-effectiveness-planning/institutional-assessment/surveys/documents/CCSSE2013Executivesummary_000.pdf What thoughts came to mind from the data you saw today? What are the challenges with the possibility of creating more community based projects? QEP will help with pre-orientation, orientation and advisement CARE (Continuous Assessment and Responsive Engagement)

CARE CCSSE identified Academic Alert & Intervention System as a needed "High Impact Practice" in (April 2013) Faculty led Early Alert program design team formed (Spring 2013)   Broadened the definition and impact of Early Alert (Sum '13). CARE survey administered (Oct '13) found that 90% of faculty believe the College should develop an Early Alert system Faculty will be able to enroll in a Professional Development course to learn more about CARE and develop individualized CARE strategies May 2014 This gives you just a taste about how we have used and could use CCSSE data to influences decisions that we make, I encourage you to visit the website to see the full report when you have a chance. Have a great spring semester!
