A Study on Sprinkling, Pouring, and/or Immersion Baptism A Study on Sprinkling, Pouring, and/or Immersion

Baptism is Essential to Salvation “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” - Mark 16:16 (NKJV) “Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” - Acts 2:38 (NKJV) “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” - Acts 22:16 (NKJV)

Baptism is Essential to Becoming a Disciple of Christ “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.” - Matt 28:19-20 (NKJV) “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” - Gal 3:27 (NKJV)

The Need for Baptism Has Been Established Even when the need for baptism has been established for people to respond today, many times questions still linger… Is baptism meant to be administered with immersion, pouring, or sprinkling? This lesson is designed for those here today who might have these questions…

The Greek Words for “Baptize" and “Baptism" The words are "baptizo" and "baptisma"... Note that the words "baptize" and "baptism" are not actually translations of the Greek words, but are transliterations Transliteration means “the conversion of a text from one script to another” To prove the authentic meaning, we need to look to the authorities concerning the Greek language

Strong’s Concordance G907 βαπτίζω baptizō bap-tid'-zo From a derivative of G911; to make whelmed (that is, fully wet); used only (in the New Testament) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technically) of the ordinance of Christian baptism: - baptist, baptize, wash.

Thayer’s Definition G907 βαπτίζω baptizō Thayer Definition: 1) to dip repeatedly, to immerse, to submerge (of vessels sunk) 2) to cleanse by dipping or submerging, to wash, to make clean with water, to wash one’s self, bathe 3) to overwhelm

Vine’s Expository Dictionary Vine's Expository Dictionary of N.T. words: "baptism, consisting of the processes of immersion, submersion and emergence"

The Words in YOUR Bible Romans 6:1-5 Colossians 2:11-13 Which action (immersion, pouring, sprinkling) is a: "burial?” "likeness of His death?” "likeness of His resurrection?"

Acknowledgement of Numerous Bible Students John Calvin (Presbyterian): “The word baptize signifies to immerse. It is certain that immersion was the practice of the primitive church.” Martin Luther (Lutheran): “’Baptism’ is a Greek word and may be translated ‘immerse.’ I would have those who are to be baptized altogether dipped.” John Wesley (Methodist): “’Buried with Him by baptism’ alluding to the ancient manner baptizing by immersion.” Bishop Coxe (Episcopalian): “’Immersion,’ The word means to dip. I wish that all Christians would restore the primitive practice.” Father Brenner (Catholic): “For thirteen hundred years was baptism an immersion of the person under water.”

Man may alter specific Bible teaching… But Jesus condemned the religious leaders of His day for committing the same type of error. - Mark 7:1-13 Laying aside the commandments of God, they were keeping traditions of men… By keeping certain traditions, they were not keeping the commandments of God!

Even if one is sincere… We are right with God, only when we do the Master's will! - Matthew 7:21-23 Love for Jesus will be revealed by keeping His commandments - John 14:15; 15:10,14 “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.” - 1 John 5:3 (NKJV)

What Have We Learned? That the Greek words (baptize & baptism) mean "immersion" “Sprinkling" or "pouring" is inconsistent with the terminology that the apostle Paul used in the Bible to describe baptism There is no question… Immersion is the form of baptism that is taught in the Bible !

Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch Acts 8:35-39

Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch Acts 8:35-39 "both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water“ "he baptized (immersed) him” "they came up out of the water"

Baptism is Essential to Salvation “Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” - Acts 2:38 (NKJV) “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” - Acts 22:16 (NKJV)

Baptism is Essential to Becoming a Disciple of Christ “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” - Gal 3:27 (NKJV) “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.” - Matt 28:19-20 (NKJV)
