Activator Prompt: What are the elements of expository writing?

Elements of Expository Writing Purpose To inform Examples Newspaper Textbook Magazine article Brochures Characteristics One expository passage may be organized using several different text structures. Text Structures: Cause/effect Chronological Compare/contrast Description Problem/solution

Parts of an Expository Essay Introductory Paragraph Hooks the reader Provides background information on the topic Includes the thesis statement Thesis Statement tells the purpose of the writing tells the main idea of the writing usually just one sentence everything else in the paper supports this statement

Parts of an Expository Essay Body Paragraphs Support your thesis statement Provide evidence Each paragraph contains a topic sentence. Topic Sentence: Tells the main idea of the paragraph

Parts of an Expository Essay Concluding Paragraph Restate the thesis statement Summarize your essay Give the reader an opportunity to think deeper (a lasting thought)
