The Five Pillars of Islam

1. Declaration of Faith There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His Messenger [or Prophet]. 1

2. Daily Prayer The mandatory prayers performed 5 times a day: * dawn * noon * late afternoon * sunset * before going to bed Wash before praying. Face Mecca and use a prayer rug. 2

Call to Prayer The call to prayer by the muezzin in the minaret. Pray in the mosque on Friday. 2

3. Charity Almsgiving (charitable donations). Why? Because all things belong to Allah. Donate about 2.5% of wealth per year. 3

4. Fasting No eating or drinking from sunrise to sunset during holy month of Ramadan. Considered a method of self- purification. 4

5. The Hajj The pilgrimage to Mecca. Must be done at least once in a Muslim’s lifetime. 2-3 million Muslims make the pilgrimage every year. 5

5. The Hajj Those who complete the pilgrimage can add the title hajji to their name. 5

The Qur’an Muslims believe it contains the word of God. 114 suras (chapters). In the name of Allah, the compassionate, the merciful. Written in Arabic.

Sharia What is Sharia? Examples The body of Islamic law that regulates daily living. Examples Up to four wives allowed for men. No alcohol or pork may be consumed. No gambling. Women must dress modestly.

Jihad Literally means personal “struggle” to fight evil and sin in oneself. Can also mean military struggle against unbelievers who threaten Islam. –Holy War

Minaret Prayer tower from which a muezzin chants the call to prayer.

The Mosque The Muslim place of worship.

The Dome of the Rock Mosque in Jerusalem Mount Moriah Rock where Muhammad ascended into heaven.

Umma The community of faithful.

Hadith The sayings and deeds of Muhammad. Used as a guide for proper Islamic belief and behavior.

Essential Question: Why was Islam able to spread so quickly and convert so many to the new religion?
