Understanding Symbols

What do these images mean to you?

Do you recognize any of these?

What do you think of when you see this sign? Bonus question: can you think of other ways we communicate this symbol?

What about this image?

These are all examples of symbols: Images that mean something other than themselves. A symbol occurs when an image takes on a common meaning among large groups of people. Some ideas (like peace) can have many different symbols assigned to them. What kinds of symbols do we use to represent love?

Symbols of Love

“Learning About U . S . Symbols with Annie and Moby” We clearly already have some knowledge of how symbols work, as we see and read them every day! Now let’s watch a brief movie by BrainPOP Jr. to learn more about symbols in our country : “Learning About U . S . Symbols with Annie and Moby”

Post-movie discussion Name one new thing you learned from the video. Were you surprised by any of the American symbols discussed by Annie and Moby? Why or why not? How did the video help you better understand symbols?

Let’s review: how is the American flag symbolic?

Why might we have chosen the bald eagle to represent our country Why might we have chosen the bald eagle to represent our country? What does the eagle stand for?

Did you know our state has its own set of symbols?

What do you notice about our flag? How does it represent our state?

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE SYMBOLS There are many other symbols chosen to represent South Dakota. Let’s take a look at a few of them: SOUTH DAKOTA STATE SYMBOLS

RECAP: WHAT ARE SYMBOLS? SYMBOLS ARE IMAGES THAT STAND FOR SOMETHING OTHER THAN THEMSELVES. For example, we might use a red rose or red heart to tell others we love them. We use emojis to communicate our feelings to others through imagery. And when we see a bald eagle, we think of the strength and power of our country.

What was your favorite symbol from today’s discussion?
