Learning intentions: Success criteria: Today I will explain scientific literacy and use my knowledge of the Engineering Design Process to create a prototype. Success criteria: So I can solve a real-world problem that I am curious about based on my scientific research and communicate my process in a lab report.

Agenda: What is scientific literacy? How do we teach the process of scientific literacy? Engineering Design Process Review How do we teach our students to persevere? Your turn: Build a prototype based on a problem you discovered. Check out other activities: Digital Breakout, etc. Time for closure and discussion

What is literacy? Have you ever really thought about what it means to be literate? We are all familiar with literacy as it relates to ELA, but what about science? Is there a difference? Turn and talk with a partner about your definition of literacy. Now discuss what it means to be literate in science.

STEM with the Standards: Bringing Science Back Focus on Scientific Literacy What is scientific literacy? Literacy is the competence or knowledge in a specific area. Therefore, scientific literacy must be the ability or competence to understand and apply scientific processes to what makes us curious in the world around us. If a student is curious about space, do we give them an opportunity to research, create a model, and communicate observations to the the class? Often, we only provide the basic facts due to lack of time, and we hope students will take that curiosity about space and conduct more research on his or her own time. How often are we so focused on the facts and standards that students must regurgitate for the test that we miss the natural curiosity of science?

STEM with the Standards: Bringing Science Back Focus on Scientific Literacy Our goal in this session is to “Bring the Science Back”. We can add science to ELA and math, but it is not the same as infusing ELA and math into the science. You will gain ways to help your students problem solve real-world issues using the EDP, Engineering Design Process. Many students lack the ability to follow steps and persevere to find a solution. When we give them a challenge that is relevant and interesting, they will be engaged. However, it is necessary to make expectations and procedures clear from the beginning.

STEM with the Standards: Bringing Science Back Focus on Scientific Literacy We are leaping into the “Upside Down”. A world of new standards and a new focus on the way we teach science. We should not teach from the front of the class, but blend in with the learners as they discover their path of curiosity in each of the TN science core ideas. Let the students experience the role of a scientist.

Engineering Design – Quick Review You can make it as detailed as needed for your grade level. Start simple and move to more complex ideas. Remind students that it is a cycle.

Perseverance: This is a tough one!! Nothing can happen without it. Start with EDP mini tasks and build up to the big ones. Brain games are great! Mini Tasks: Tennis ball challenge and catapult.

Brain Games Puzzles of any kind Toys that must be put together Games that are challenging Riddles Secret Codes These all lead to Science Breakouts and building prototypes. Let’s try one.

A typical week: Students study and practice small EDP tasks at the beginning of the year. Yes, notes are still a must. We always start with notes on the topic we are learning. We have guided notes that go in a journal. We try to plan a hands-on lab to go with every topic building on skills we already know. We change and rearrange our lessons every period. Do not be afraid to change if it is not working. Mon. – Introduction and Notes Tues. – More Notes with videos or interactive notes through Nearpod Wed. – Lab stations with information, sorts, etc. to extend knowledge on topic Thurs. – Introduce rubric and begin project. Fri. – Continue project and work to complete.

it’s your turn. Choose your topic, discover the problem and how you will solve it. Go to stemwiththestandards.weebly.com - Click More and go to Bringing Science Back Invasive Species - Trap Energy – Inventions (House, vehicle, etc.) The Great Pacific Garbage Patch – Machine to clean Winter the Dolphin – Prosthetic limb Mars/Moon – Rover Roller Coaster – Paper Roller Coaster Other Activies: Digital Breakout Catapult Tic – Tac- Toe

Closure: What do you think you can use in your classroom? Be sure to complete the evaluation. Thanks so much for coming. Feel free to contact me at kaplanc@rcschools.net Stemwiththestandards.weebly.com
