Launch Readiness Review Temple University Fred Avery, Ny’jaa Bobo, Gene Council and Salvatore Giorgi 05/27/2012

Mission Overview Measure the earth’s magnetic field as a function of altitude Measure flight dynamics of the rocket Capture biological samples in the atmosphere Identify types and concentration of samples as function of altitude Measure UV intensity as function of altitude Identify UV damaged DNA in samples Figure: A UV radiation induced thymine-thymine cyclobutane dimer (right) is the type of DNA damage which is undone by photolyase.

Final Payload Figures : Fully Constructed/Integrated Payload (Top and Side Views)

Final Payload Payload is fully integrated All parts are situated properly and comfortably A small amount of space remains to add extra weight Both filtration system and electrical system function properly

User Guide Compliance Requirement Payload Requirement Status Mass allotment: 6.5 lbs (20 lbs total) 5.7 lbs Volume allotment: 9.3” (dia.), 4.75” (ht.) 9.3”, 4.5” The payload’s center of gravity (CG): In 1”X1”X1” envelope of centroid (or in area designated for sharing teams? 1”X0.91”X0.94” Activation met under requirement: (either 1.SYS.1 or 1.SYS.2) 1.SYS.2 Still in Progress Structure mounts: Top and bottom bulkheads. No mounts to sides of cans. 5 bulkheads for top/ bottom Sharing: Fully developed? Yes

Integration Plan and Procedure Payload integration is almost fully completed Payloads will be connected by using five standoffs Working with West Virginia University on atmospheric port issues Will T off near their canister since they are closer to the slide Need to determine the type of fittings and tubing WVU is using Integration procedure is currently being finalized and documented Integration procedure is documented step by step This will allow the integration process to be rapid while at WFF

Integration Plan and Procedure Mass allotment Combined weight for both payloads is approximately 6.75 lbs (without additional weight) With additional weight, payload is 8 lbs Spare weight will be added to meet weight requirement Payload with added weight is approximately 6 lbs Volume allotment Diameter of payload is 9.3” and the height is 4.5” Combined height is approximately 9.5” between both canisters Spacers will be included to fulfill requirement Activation met under requirement Still in progress (1.SYS.2) First priority to be completed by the beginning of this week Sharing Both Temple and Drexel Payloads are compatible and nearly ready for integration

Integration Plan and Procedure Combined Payloads (Temple and Drexel) Combined COG: x: -1.32”, y: 2.04”, z: 2.10”

Testing Results Leak Problem has been resolved Teflon tape, electrical tape, and silicon grease prevents leak Collection of aerosols will no longer be affected All other tests and simulations remain valid No further testing is needed until arrival to the Wallops Flight Facility Payload is deemed safe to fly All Simulations and tests prove payload will be durable and safe during flight

Level of Readiness Filter System completed Spectrometer completed Activation system needs some work. First priority this week. Status of sensors All sensors are functioning with the exception of the xy accelerometer and gyroscope These sensors are not essential to the flight Integration with Drexel Integration is set and planned, alignment of screw holes is needed and integration will be completed Standoffs are compatible and volume requirement is met Center of Gravity Requirement Center of Gravity requirement needs work between both payloads but individual center of gravity requirement is met (see user’s guide compliance) Weight Requirement Current weight is 6 lbs (alone) however, the additional metal added will allow requirement to be accomplished

Level of Readiness Action Items Add additional weight to payload to meet weight requirement Follow up with Drexel and re-evaluate requirements and integrate to make sure everything is properly integrated and met Sterilize all parts and conceal them in order to prepare for travel to Virginia Gather all items needed to bring to the Wallops Flight Facility Assure all requirements are achieved before departure from Temple University
