Mr. Caraba’s Science Class Weight and mass Mr. Caraba’s Science Class

Weight and Mass THAT IS HEAVY MAN. Suppose you want to measure your weight. To find the weight, you step on a scale. Your body weight presses down on the springs inside the scale. The more you weigh, the more the springs compress, causing the pointer on the scale to turn farther giving a higher reading. HOWEVER……. THAT IS HEAVY MAN.

Weight and Mass The scale would not show the same reading if you took it on the Moon and step on it. Do you think you weigh less or more on the Moon?

Weight and Mass You weigh less on the moon. Your weight is a measure of the force of gravity on you. On Earth, all objects are attracted towards the center of the planet by the force of Earth’s gravity. On another planet the force of Gravity may be more or less than it is on Earth. On the moon, you would weigh only about 1/6 of your weight on Earth.

Weight and Mass Why do you weight less on the Moon than on Earth? The MASS of an object is the measurement of the amount of matter in the object. If you travel to the Moon, the amount of matter in your body (your mass) does NOT change. Unlike WEIGHT, MASS does NOT change with location, even when the force of Gravity of an object changes.

Weight and Mass To measure the properties of matter, scientists use as system called: International System of Units (SI) The SI unit of mass is kilogram – kg The Gram (g) is a smaller unit of mass. 1,000 g is 1 Kg. A nickel has a mass of about 5g A baseball has a mass of about 150g.
