Steps Use the Distributive Property Combine like terms on the same side of the equal sign. Use the Addition Property to move variables on one side, combine. Use the Addition Property to move constants on the other side of the variable, combine. Use Multiplication Property to isolate variable from coefficient, simplify. Check

Example Solve and Check 4 – 7m = -3m + 4

Example Solve and Check 6y – 8 = 3y + 7

Example Solve and Check x + 20 + 2x = -10 – 2x - 15

Example Solve and Check 3( z + 2) = 5z + 6

Example Solve and Check 7( 6 + w ) = 6 (2 + w)

Example Translate and solve The sum of negative forty-two and sixteen is what number?

Example Translate and solve Three times the difference of negative fourteen and what number amounts to negative forty-eight?

Question A classmate shows you steps from solving an equation. The solution does not check, but the class mate is unable to find the error. Help your student out 2 (3x - 5) = 5x – 7 6x – 5 = 5x – 7 6x - 5x - 5 = 5x – 5x – 7 x - 5 = – 7 x -5 + 5 = - 7 + 5 x = -2
