Islamic Beliefs and Practices

The Qur’an (Islamic Holy Book) Muslims believe the Qur’an to be the exact words of God as told to Muhammad.

Islamic Beliefs and Practices •When the world ends, God will judge all people. •Those who have obeyed God will enter into Paradise (Heaven) •No eating pork or drinking alcohol •Women have fewer rights than men •Participate in jihad (personal inner struggle to obey Islamic teachings) orholy war to defend Muslim lands from non-Muslims

The Five Pillars of Islam (Basic Beliefs) 1.“There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet” 2.Pray five times per day 3.Give to the poor (alms) 4.Fast during the month of Ramadan 5.Make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in your lifetime

Some Practices of Islamic Daily Life •Treat guests with generosity •Do not owe money •Obey your leaders

The Quran and the Sunnah  (the way Muhammad lived) form the basis for Islamic law, or Shariah.  Public law in Islamic countries is at least in part, based on Islamic law.  The “separation of religion and state” does not exist in Muslim countries as it does in most western nations.    Different Muslim countries interpret Islamic law differently.
