English I honors, spring 2018 Mla format English I honors, spring 2018

What is mla? MLA (Modern Language Association) is the standard format used in literary essays and research papers. The humanities (English, history, languages, philosophy, etc) and liberal arts use MLA for writing and documentation. It provides a consistent format for writers and a guide for citing and documenting sources.

Basic features of mla format Times New Roman, 12 point font, double spaced Header in the top right corner containing your last name and page number Heading on the left hand side containing your name, the course, the teacher, the date A title centered below the heading, with significant words capitalized. Do not bold or underline. In-text citations included in the body of your paper. Whenever you reference anyone else’s work or ideas, you must give them credit. You will cite when you’re summarizing, paraphrasing, or using direct quote There is no punctuation between author's last name and page number. The period is after the parentheses. Example: Montresor vows revenge after Fortunato “venters upon insult” (Poe 174). A Works Cited page (or Work Cited, for single source papers)

Plagiarism When you take someone else’s words or ideas and pass them off as your own, this is plagiarism. Avoid plagiarism by using in-text citations and including a work’s cited page.

Summarizing, paraphrasing, quoting Discuss What is the difference between summarizing a source, paraphrasing it, and using a direct quotation?

Summarizing, paraphrasing, or quoting? Tattoos and body piercings are becoming more and more commonplace. In fact, if you are standing on a city corner in any city in the United States, you are likely to see a lot of tattoos and body piercings on people walking by. According to an article found in the USA Today Magazine, “…body art is going mainstream and growing in popularity, especially among young people” (Sherly).

Summarizing, paraphrasing, or quoting? Just 10 years ago, people in charge of hiring would have placed resumes of people with visible tattoos and body piercings in the discard pile. Today, that policy has changed. A significant percentage of younger generation employees have tattoos or other body marks (Sherly).

Summarizing, paraphrasing, or quoting? This article quotes John A. Challenger, a chief executive officer for an outsourcing firm, on his views about tattoos and other body art. He believes that times have changed and that companies will have to become more accepting of body art if they want to hire young people. However, he recommends that job seekers find out about a future employer’s acceptance of body art when interviewing for a position (Sherly).

Work’s Cited page Author Title of source (the name of your story) Title of container (is the story in an anthology?) Other contributors (editors, illustrators, etc) Version (edition) Number Publisher Publication date Location (page numbers)

Formatting a work’s cited page Times New Roman, 12 point font, double spaced Work Cited or Work’s Cited centered at the top of the page You will include a hanging indentation Instead of identing the first line (as you do at the start of a new paragraph), the first line in each citation will be normal. Every line of the citation that follows will be indented. Note: The Work’s Cited page does not count in your page count!
