My Survival Guide Hatchet Book by Gary Paulsen By: Halle Brne

1. First Aid I picked first aid as my number one tool because, I thought this would come in handy if I got hurt by an animal, like when Brian got attacked by a porcupine.

2. Food I picked food as my second tool because, I don’t know how to fish or shoot, so even if I had a gun or fishing pole, it wouldn’t help me. Brian had lots of trouble finding food when he first arrived, but if I brought food, that wouldn’t happen.

3. Axe or Hatchet I chose an axe or hatchet as my next tool because, chopping wood would help me make a fire or a wall for a shelter, like when Brian used his hatchet to chop wood for his fire and to make a wall for his shelter.

4. Water I chose water as my fourth tool because, if I was in an area that had no fresh or clean water then I would have to drink it and puke like Brian did.

5. Compass A compass will help me tell which way to go. North, South, East, or West, Brian didn’t know which way to go when he was looking for food.

6. Map A map of the area I was in would help me find food, a lake, and trees. Brian couldn’t leave the lake when he was looking for food, because he thought he’d get lost.

7. Lighter A lighter would help me start a fire. It’s very hard to make a fire without one. A lighter makes sparks, just like Brian did when he hit the rock wall with his hatchet and sparks flew on the wood.

8. Tent, Blanket, Pillows, and a Sleeping Bag A tent would keep me safe from animals, like when Brian got attacked by the skunk. A blanket, pillows, and sleeping bag would keep me warm. Brian didn’t get cold, but if it was winter, he’d be freezing.

9. Flashlight A flashlight would help me see in the dark. If an animal came up to me in the dark, I wouldn’t be able to see it. Brian couldn’t see the skunk or the porcupine because it was dark.

10. Insect Repellent Insects are very annoying. Brian got attacked by mosquitoes and got so puffy he could barely see. Insect repellent would solve that problem.

11. Extra Clothes Extra clothes would come in handy if I needed more layers, because I was cold. Or in Brian’s case, hot. Brian got so hot when he was working, he had to take his shirt off.

12. Climbing Equipment I would bring climbing equipment as my last choice because, if there was lots of rocks, I wouldn’t have trouble climbing them. Brian couldn’t reach the food storage ledge, it would’ve been much easier to use climbing equipment.
