July days

What was the ‘July Days’? The July days was an event that were a series of violent protests or an uprising of workers and soldiers in Petrograd in the first week of July 1917. It was between 16th of July and the 20th of July, 1917. It took place in Petrograd, Russia.

Photo of the events of what happened during the July days.

What happened? Before the July days, the June offensive was unsuccessful military operation of World War I, planned by the Russian minister of war Aleksandr Kerensky. So, this kind of lead up to the July days. At least 100,000 gathered in the streets of Petrograd. Most of them included factory workers, soldiers and sailors. When both refused to take command of the uprising (the soviets and Bolsheviks), it was eventually dispersed (to spread apart in different areas) and crushed by government troops. The Bolsheviks took the blame for the July Days uprising. The leaders were targeted by government propaganda and arrests. Lenin was forced into hiding disguising him self as a casual fisherman. Lenin also fled to Finland.

What were the causes? The several factors of the causes of the uprising of the July days were: the provisional Government attempt to escalate the war effort. A collapse in the government ministry. The constant stream of Bolshevik propaganda commending the government. calling for a transfer of power to the Soviets.

The causulties? 716 killed or wounded from demonstrators side, 94 killed or wounded from Government side. 100 arrested

The outcome of the July Days: The outcome of the July Days represented a temporary decline in the growth of Bolshevik power and influence in the period before the October Revolution. In the end the government took all victory with diffusion of demonstrations and strikes, arrest of Bolsheviks, workers and sailors.
