The Process Of Science

Scientific Method Is a set of orderly steps for experimentation that is used to explore observations and answer questions.

Parts of the Scientific Method 1. Observations Suggest questions to investigate 2. Question/Research Why does something happen 3. Hypothesis An educated guess If….then….. A testable explanation for an observation and inferences 4. Experiment 1 variable at a time A test of a hypothesis 5. Analyze results Determine whether data supports or does not support the hypothesis or prediction 6. Draw conclusion/Communicate results To understand something not previously understood

Parts of an Experiment Independent Variable- the component that is changed by the experimenter. Dependent Variable- the component that is measured/data collected by the experimenter. Controls/ Constants - the components that are kept the same throughout the experiment.

Design An Experiment You will be given a seed that is going through the process of germination. Design an experiment using all of the steps of the scientific method. Record some observations about the seed. Research and record questions about the seed by talking with you group about the seed. 3. Compose a hypothesis that is testable about the seed. 4. Design an experiment identifying the variables and constants. List the steps to perform the experiment. 5. Design a table of graph to collect and analyze the data.
