4.3 Reducing Our Impact on Biological Diversity

In 1992, many countries around the world signed an agreement to set national policies to maintain diversity and preserving life on earth. United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity

Controlling Spreading of Species Strategies to Conserve Biological Diversity Protecting what we have (conserving) Restoring Policies Controlling Spreading of Species Conserving genetic resources

Protecting What We Have In-situ Conservation – maintaining the populations of wild organisms in their natural environment/ecosystem Protect our national parks – protect the wild organisms and their natural habitats , examples: Banff, Jasper National Parks We need to keep these areas protected – requires government and non-government organizations

Restoring Programs are in place to restore endangered species and habitats to a healthy state Nature Conservancy of Canada Ducks Unlimited Canada Captive breading program World Wildlife Fund

http://www.worldwildlife.org/

Policies Federal and provincial governments have put laws into place to protect endangered or threatened species. Hunting laws, fishing laws

Controlling spread of exotic species The Threat of Non-Native Plants and Animals "Non-native" species are also called "introduced" or "exotic" species; this term refers to organisms that originate elsewhere and are brought into a new area. They may dominate the local species or in some way negatively impact the environment for native species.

Conserving Genetic Resources Ex-situ conservation - Conservation of biological diversity components outside natural habitats , example is zoos

Zoos

Seed Banks

Strategies to conserve biological diversity Maintaining our ecosystems and species In-situ Conservation – maintaining the populations of wild organisms in their natural environment/ecosystem Protect our national parks – protect the wild organisms and their natural habitats , example is Banff, jasper We need to keep these areas protected – requires government and non-government organizations 2. Many programs to restore ecosystems and species
