South Carolina Geography

Objectives Explain the influence of physical geography on South Carolina history. Make and use maps, globes, graphs, charts, and models to illustrate and analyze location and spatial distributions of physical and cultural features in South Carolina and the United States. Describe and locate physical and local characteristics such as landforms, drainage patterns, and natural resources in South Carolina and the US.

Latitude and Longitude

Latitude and Longitude Latitude- a measure of the distance, in degrees, north or south of the equator Longitude- the distance, in degrees, east or west of the prime meridian, the starting point located in Greenwich England

Landform Regions

Landform Regions Coastal Zone- Stretches from the Atlantic Ocean inland for about 10 miles. Coastal Plain (Outer and Inner)- Stretches from the Coastal Zone to the Sandhills. This is the largest landform region and is approx. 20,000 sq. miles.

Landform Regions Sandhills- Stretches from the Coastal Plain to the Piedmont, at the Fall Line. Piedmont- Stretches from the Fall Line to the Blue Ridge. Blue Ridge- Extreme northwest corner of the state. (smallest at approx. 600 sq. miles)

Waterways

River Systems There are four river systems in South Carolina. Savannah Edisto Santee Pee Dee (Only the Edisto is completely within SC)

Lakes There are eleven major lakes in South Carolina. They are: Moultrie, Marion, Murray, Greenwood, Hartwell, Wateree, Keowee, Thurmond, Jocassee, Russell, and Wylie. (all are man-made)

Climate South Carolina has a mild humid subtropical climate. The growing season lasts from April through October.
