Metadata - Catalogues and Digitised works basic information for all - PART 2

2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH Overview Integrating FRBR Editing a SIP 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH 3. FRBR 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

FRBR Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records conceptual entity-relationship model developed by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA, 1997) Taking a user-focus approach – what expects the user to find in bibliopraphic records and how this information will be used It provides links to navigate through the hierarchy of relationships it is separate from specific cataloguing standards 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

FRBR comprises groups of entities: Group 1 entities represent the products of intellectual or artistic endeavour. They are Work, Expression, Manifestation, and Item (WEMI). Group 2 entities are responsible for the custodianship of Group 1’s intellectual or artistic endeavour. They are person and corporate body. Group 3 entities are subjects of Group 1 or Group 2’s intellectual endeavour, and include concepts, objects, events, places. 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

Group 1 entities are the foundation of the FRBR model Work is a “distinct intellectual or artistic creation.” “The Origin of Species” by Charles Darwin Expression is the specific intellectual or artistic form that a work takes each time it is ‘realized’. „Über die Entstehung der Arten“ in der Übersetzung von David Haek. Manifestation is “the physical embodiment of an expression of a work. (all the physical objects that bear the same characteristics) - ISBN The translation of 1893 by David Haek published in Leipzig. Item is “a single exemplar of a manifestation”. Bavarian State Library 14/1529 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH Group 2 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH Group 3 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH Why is FRBR important RDA (Resource Description & Access) the future successor of the AACR2 (Anglo-american Cataloguing Rules) aligns with the FRBR framework. The future Europeana Data Model (EDM) will also support the different abstraction levels of description (FRBR Group 1 entities) 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

Sample of FRBR implementation OCLC FictionFinder FictionFinder is a FRBR-based prototype that provides access to over 2.9 million bibliographic records for fiction books, eBooks, and audio materials described in OCLC WorldCat. (2007, http://fictionfinder.oclc.org/ ) 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH What we can use... FRBR Display Tool (v2.0) by the LoC Transforms MARC records into MARCXML and then segments the records into the FRBR „Works“, „Expressions“, and „Manifestations“ (http://www.loc.gov/marc/marc-functional-analysis/tool.html ) XML Schema for FRBR available since March 2010 (implement FRBR into a production system – 1st Version – music) (http://www.dlib.indiana.edu/projects/vfrbr/ ) – provides a re-usable model for representing data in XML that conforms to FRBR (metadata fields etc...) 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH OAIS Overview Work Manifestation Expression Item Portal Pre Ingest Item 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH 4. Editing a SIP Submission Information Package („what is sent to BHL-E“) 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

Task 3.1.5: Tools that compose SIPs will be created Based on MARC (descriptive data) and METS (container) 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

What we need to think about Which metadata fields exceeding the MARC21 standard are necessary to provide our desired BHL-E portal search functionalities? D2.1 provided a list of suggested metadata fields on the levels: Title Item Page Creator Rights Theses fields have been divided into REQUIRED and OPTIONAL fields. 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH Status The list of D2.1 Metadata fields was further mapped to the Library of Congress Metadata for Digital Content and to the Europeana ESE fields (28. January 2010, bhle-metadata@googlegroups.com http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AU_9CQQdVjCiZHRmcWYzbV8xZm1qN3NwZ2I&hl=en). This Mapping was used in the interim Excel Tool of the BHL-E METS Editor Desired outcome of this meeting: What are our BHL-E Metadata fields on each level? (Necessary for the data preparation and integration to BHL-E) 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH Pre-Ingest Process Envisaged Functionalities/Steps: The user provides the Structural Information Book structure Types of pages User imports the native Metadata (automated mapping process for standard metadata like: MARC21, Dublin Core, MODS…) If no standard Metadata Scheme is used the mapping tool provides field to field mapping The user indicates for the files: Execute OCR reading Connect to taxonomies (eg. uBio) 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH Pre-Ingest (2) 4) Automatic Check if SIP meets BHL-E standards 5) The Pre-Ingest module creates the SIP and previews the outcome (): BHL-E format Europeana format Dublin Core .... 6) The user submits the SIP to the Ingest functionality of BHL Europe 7) The ingest to BHL-E is an automated procedure 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18

2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH BHL-E METS Tool A special tool will be available in June 2010 (one pre-condition: BHL-E Metadata fixed) To start now: Excel submission One folder with: Scanned pages MARC record Excel file 2010, AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH November 18
