Perception Perception is defined as the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses. Question How did your perceptions affect what you saw and what you did not see in the images?

How do you define Worldview?

Worldview is… Framework of ideas and beliefs through which an individual or group interprets and perceives the world. On a personal level: It is the "big picture" way you see your place in the world, the actions you will take, and how you organize the events in your life to make meaning of them. People tend to adopt a worldview early in life, and often do not change it radically in adulthood.

Components of Worldview Beliefs A belief is the acceptance that a statement is true of that something exists. Example: The earth is round Values Values are a moral standard of behaviour of either a person or a group. Example: Treat others with respect Perceptions A perception is a way of looking at or viewing something based on your experiences. Example: Some view war as necessary to keep peace while other believe war is evil. Who is right? Is war right or wrong?

Example of Worldview Consider two guys standing in an art museum. One is color blind and the other is not. The color-blind person will see only shades of gray. The person with normal vision will see the rich colors of paintings. These different pairs of eyes see different things. These pairs of eyes are like worldviews. Different worldviews cause people to understand the world differently.

Differing Worldviews Individuals and groups around the world have different worldviews and therefore can view things very differently. These differing beliefs, values and perceptions have caused much conflict historically and continue to create conflict today.

Differing Student Examples Mexico City, Mexico Hola. My name is Elena. I’m from Mexico City. My family is Mestizo, from a mixture of Spanish and Aztec ancestors. I enjoy the history of my city that shows in the old Spanish architecture like in our main Cathedral and the old Aztec temples and the artifacts that are dug up all over the city. My older brother and sisters come home for important holidays; we celebrate with traditional foods that often include beans and chilies.

Differing Student Examples Venice, Italy Ciao. My name is Sergio and I live in Venice, an ancient trading city located on some islands along the northeast coast of Italy. I love the many statues, old building, and beautiful paintings that are found everywhere in my neighbourhood. Going to church is important to me. I also volunteer to hand out pamphlets to the many tourists who come to see our canals, buildings, and art.

Differing Student Examples Tokyo, Japan Konnichi wa. My name is Keiko. I live with my parents and brother in busy Tokyo, Japan. Centuries ago, the city was called Edo, and grew around Edo Castle, which you can still see today in downtown. I love the mix of traditional Japanese life with the ultramodern. I believe in respect for family, love traditional arts like kabuki theatre, and sports like sumo. At the same time we have the latest technology in things like computers, TV’s, and video games.
